Big in the 1950' least in Cleveland, Ohio. Always circular, usually gold-colored metal, may have been made of other materials but not at our school. Girls wore them pinned on their right upper blouse/sweater front to proudly advertise that they were the coveted virginal "good girl" material, highly prized in that era.
